London Dreams Review ***1/2

London Dreams is an ambitious film telling the story of Arjun (Ajay Devgan), a boy from Punjab who’s biggest desire is to create the first hindi rock band, get appreciation for his talent, and play at Wembley. He will let nothing stand in the way of his dream, not the pretty female dancer or his best friend Mannu (Salman Khan). Arjun invites Mannu to come to London with him and be a part of his band, however he is angered when Mannu, who was only to be back-up, wins the hearts of the public and gets the attention and fame Arjun craved without lifting a finger. Arjun then plots to destroy Mannu.

The basic plotting in the film is good. It is surprisingly short and to the point without veering off into any irritating side-tracks. There are holes. For instance, how did Arjun survive when he ran away from his uncle as a child. It shows him playing music in the streets of London but where did he live, how the hell did he make enough money to pay for music school and how did he then pay for his instruments?

Secondly, the ending. I find it hard to believe that Mannu would so readily forgive a man who tried so underhandedly to wreck his life by hooking him on drugs etc. Perhaps their dostana is just very strong, but even so…perhaps ’a year later’ and then forgiveness would have worked instead of a-couple-of-days-after-you-bitched-me-out-in-front-of-a-live-audience forgiveness.

Salman Khan as Mannu prompts the question ’Is he in Special Ed…I mean, is he?’ Mannu’s innocent outlook and naïve nature would have been better suited to a younger actor, I’m thinking Hrithik Roshan. Though Salman (thankfully) did not overact as he did at the end of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (and I did enjoy the airport scene, a sly nod to Mr Shahrukh Khan methinks) and perhaps had Salman himself been about ten years younger he could have done justice to the part. But that is the main point. Salman Khan is looking old. He looks bloated and his romancing of Asin (far too young for him) is as creepy as his real life relationship with Katrina Kaif. Perhaps it is time for him to start acting his age (and I’m not even going to get started on those hair implants).

Ajay Devgan, an actor whose work I very much admire, was very much miscast in this film. He excels in dark dramas such as Omkara (Othello), Company, Halla Bol, Apaharan etc and so I can see why he was picked but, sadly, it just didn’t work. He gives his intense, brooding best but there is just no way (in any reality) Ajay could be a rock star. His role would have been better suited to Saif Ali Khan, his Omkara co-star, who is not younger but inhabits more of the ‘rock star’ spirit. That said, Ajay has nothing to be ashamed of and (he) was easily the best thing in the film.

London Dreams was my first encounter with Asin, the pretty southern actress, and I was left disappointed. Not by her but by the role she was given. Apart from one amusing traditional dance-to hip hop scene she was merely window dressing (why would they need a dancer in a rock band?). This was a shame as she is very pretty and has the same sort of fiery attitude as Deepika Pakudone. A little development of her character would have been nice.
The music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was, in my opinion, pretty good. I like it better than their similar effort for Rock On! (though I might be the only one). Standout songs for me were Khanabadosh and Barso Hanuman. The crowd picturisation was fantastic. In fact I thought the cinematography was above average, everything looked beautiful.

In conclusion, while having a few problems with the film, I do still recommend it to any fans of Ajay Devgan and/or (god forbid) Salman Khan. Those who are fans of Rock on! or even the Hollywood films Rockstar and Almost Famous would most likely enjoy this too. It isn’t the masterpiece it promised to be but it isn’t a disaster either. If it were a rock band it would be Bon Jovi.

Why I Love Ajay Devgan

It is not an exaggeration to say that, in terms of real acting chops, Ajay Devgan is one of the BEST working in Bollywood today. Since he is not the most attractive of actors, and does not use his body to lure in fans (John Abraham, Salman (ew) Khan, i'm looking at you) it can only be his sheer talent that has taken him this far.
His powerful yet subtle performances in Omkara and Company compete with any seen in Hollywood. He conveys an air of menace and control, stealing scenes with the intensity behind his words.

Each character he is given, he inhabits completely. Though he has a tendency to favour crazy comedy (Golmaal, All the Best, Sunday etc) he is best viewed in masterpieces such as Omkara/company and thrillers like Khakee, Deewangee, Kachche Dhaage, Apaharan, Halla Bol. He has also proven to be a good romantic lead in Mehbooba, Chori Chori (such a cute film!)and Pyaar to Hona Hi tha. Adding to this he tried his hand as a director in U Me Aur Hum (a solid first time effort).

some of his 90's films are also worth checking out, the best being Jigar, Suhaag, Hulchul, Jaan, Naajayaz etc 90's Ajay was more of an action hero than a dramatic actor though and some of his early films (Jaan, i'm looking at YOU) do make you go WTF? a bit.

Ajay's real name is Vishal Veeru Devgan and he was born in 1969. He is famous (in his personal life) for, of course, being married to my No.1 Bollywood actress, the awesome Kajol. He previously dated Karishma Kapoor and had a very public rivalry with Raveena Tandon. He is rather shy/ quiet in personality (though known as a prankster on film sets) and describes himself as 'Lazy'.

Though i love Kajol and Ajay seperatley (and support their marriage of course) onscreen they are not my favourite Jodi. I prefer Kajol with Shahrukh (my no.1 jodi) and as for Ajay i think he suits well with Karishma, Aishwarya and Urmila.

"I'm going to keep making films I believe in. Whether I am successful or not is besides the point." -Ajay Devgan

Karishma Kapoor: a re-evaluation

Firstly, is it Karishma or Karisma..i've seen it spelt both ways...

The first thing i ever saw Karishma in was Dil to Pagal Hai and, i have to say, i HATED her. I thought 'how can this ugly thing compete against Madhuri Dixit?'. It's safe to say that DTPH probably wasn't the best film to judge her beauty in given that indeed she would be compared against the stunning Madhuri and inevitably come up short.
Also, i am a BIG fan of Kareena and have always found her to be unusually beautiful in a way that Karisma is not. Kareena also had impressed me with her acting chops in films such as Omkara, Jab We Met and Asoka (we'll avoid mentiong Poo in K3G). So compared to her Karishma was (to me) just her uglier, older sister.

I now realise i was wrong, and perhaps unfair. The films that changed my mind about her were Suhaag (1994) and Jigar (1992). This early nineties Karishma that i saw was just soo cute! I love her poofy hair, her thick pre-tweezered eyebrows her funky outfits, everything. I suddenly GOT her. And i loved her Jodi with Ajay Devgan (apparently a real life couple at one point as well).

Above: Karishma with Ajay :)

Karishma was born in 1974 and is around 4 or 3 years older than Kareena. Her grandfather was the legendary Raj Kapoor star of Awara, Shree 420 etc

Karishma made her debut in Hindi cinema when she was just 17 years old in the film
Prem Qaidi. She has won Filmfare best actress for Raja Hindustani (with Aamir khan)and Fiza (with Hrithik Roshan) and best supporting actress for Dil To Pagal Hai (with SRK). These days it seems she doesn't do as much as she used to, perhaps having been eclipsed by her little sister. Still, i would be very happy if ever she made another film with Ajay Devgan!

i especially loved her in Jigar, she really looked pretty/acted well and just was a thousand times more appealing than she had been in DTPH. In fact, i think she suited with Ajay so much that they are well on their way to becoming one of my favourite Bollywood Jodi(s)

This doesn't mean that she's gonna knock kareena off of 4th place in my list of favourite Bollywood actresses, what it does mean is that i will no longer frown when i see her listed in the cast of a movie i want to watch. In fact i may well smile : )
